instrument drift

changes in an instrument, usually gradual and often predictable, that can threaten the validity of conclusions drawn from the data obtained with that instrument. An example would be the stretching of spring scales. Periodic recalibration of the measuring device helps minimize or rectify instrument drift. Also called instrument decay. See also observer drift.
