word-frequency study

word-frequency study

a study in which the frequency of to-be-remembered words is manipulated to investigate the effect of this variable on later memory. Typically, in studies of free recall, higher frequency words are better remembered, but in studies of recognition memory, lower frequency words are better remembered. See also frequency judgment.
