any disorder of sensory information received from the skin and deep tissue of the body that is associated with impaired or abnormal somatic sensation. Such disorders may affect proprioception and the perception of pain, touch, or temperature. Examples of somatosensory impairments include hypesthesia (decreased sensitivity of a sense), hyperesthesia (increased sensitivity of a sense), and hypoalgesia (diminished sensitivity to pain).
