raphe nucleus

a group of serotonergic neurons in the midline of the brainstem that project widely to the spinal cord, thalamus, basal ganglia, and cerebral cortex. Raphe nuclei are involved in alertness and sleep–wake states. Also called nucleus of the raphe; raphe.
