polysemy

n. the condition in which a word has more than one meaning, as in dear meaning “loved” or “expensive.” Psycholinguistic experiments to probe the structure of the mental lexicon frequently make use of polysemy. See also ambiguity; homonym; pun. —polysemic adj.
