pain mechanisms

pain mechanisms

neural mechanisms that mediate pain. These extend from peripheral nerve endings to the cerebral cortex, especially the cingulate cortex. Some investigators propose that sharp pain sensations are transmitted by rapidly conducting A fibers and dull pain sensations are transmitted by slowly conducting C fibers. See also gate-control theory.
