pacemaker

n. a natural or artificial device that helps establish and maintain certain biological rhythms. Unqualified, the term usually refers to a cardiac pacemaker. Natural pacemakers include the sinoatrial node, which regulates heart rhythm, and the thalamic pacemaker.
