orbitofrontal cortex

the cerebral cortex of the ventral part of each frontal lobe, having strong connections to the hypothalamus. Lesions of the orbitofrontal cortex can result in loss of inhibitions, forgetfulness, and apathy broken by bouts of euphoria, as in the well-known case of Phineas Gage.
