hyperthyroidism

n. overactivity of the thyroid gland, resulting in excessive production of thyroid hormones and a consequent increase in metabolic rate. Manifestations include nervousness, excessive activity, weight loss, and other physical problems. Compare hypothyroidism. See thyrotoxicosis.
