fertilization

n. the fusion of a sperm and an egg cell to produce a zygote. External fertilization occurs outside the female’s body, as in fish and amphibians. Mammals, birds, and reptiles have internal fertilization (i.e., within the body of the female). In humans, fertilization occurs in a fallopian tube.
