fear of darkness

normal or pathological anxiety about darkness or night. Fear of darkness is associated with feelings of helplessness and a sense of unfamiliarity. The fear first occurs normally at about 3 years of age but may develop into a specific phobia in which darkness is associated with danger and threat.
