cortex

n. (pl. cortices) the outer or superficial layer or layers of a structure, as distinguished from the central core. In mammals, the cortex of a structure is identified with the name of the gland or organ, for example, the adrenal cortex (see adrenal gland), cerebellar cortex, or cerebral cortex. Compare medulla. —cortical adj.
