birds-of-a-feather phenomenon

the tendency to affiliate with or be attracted to others similar to oneself. As a result, groups and other interpersonal aggregates (e.g., romantic couples, friendship networks) tend to be composed of individuals who are similar to one another rather than dissimilar. See also homophily.
