  2. alarm call

alarm call

alarm call

a vocalization produced by a nonhuman animal, often in response to detecting a potential predator, that warns other individuals to either escape or join in mutual attack of the predator. Alarm calls appear to be altruistic acts (placing the caller at increased risk) and are often explained through kin selection or reciprocal altruism.
