n. in psychoanalytic theory, the fantasy that one has ingested an external object, which is felt to be physically present inside the body. According to the theory, it first occurs in the oral stage, when the infant fantasizes that he or she has ingested the mother’s breast. Incorporation is thought to be an early form of, and is often confused with, identification and introjection. —incorporate vb.
