inappropriate stimulus

inappropriate stimulus

a stimulus or condition that elicits a response not normally triggered by that stimulus. For example, pressing against one’s closed eyelid elicits perception of lights; that is, a mechanical stimulus elicits a response in photoreceptors that typically respond to light.
