immunization

n. the process of conferring immunity by other than natural means. Active immunity is acquired by inoculation or vaccination, which involves the injection of a specific, prepared antigen to induce the production of natural antibodies by the body’s immune system. Passive immunity, which is short-lived (1–6 months), is acquired by the injection of prepared antibodies obtained from an animal or human already immune to the disease in question.
