hyperventilation

n. abnormally rapid and deep breathing, usually due to anxiety or emotional stress. It lowers the carbon dioxide level of the blood and produces symptoms such as light-headedness, palpitation, numbness and tingling in the extremities, perspiration, and in some cases fainting (these features are known as hyperventilation syndrome). Also called overbreathing.
