hyperarousal

n.

1. one of three sets of criteria used to diagnose posttraumatic stress disorder and acute stress disorder. Symptoms of hyperarousal include exaggerated startle response, disturbed sleep, difficulty in concentrating or remembering, and excessive vigilance.

2. a physiological response to stress. Also called acute stress response. See also fight-or-flight response. [first described by Walter B. Cannon]

tractotomy

n. the surgical interruption of a nerve tract in the brainstem or spinal cord. One form of tractotomy is of benefit in bipolar disorder that is resistant to other forms of treatment.
