hookup

n. a type of sexual encounter in which the participants have no expectation of continuing or developing their relationship beyond the sexual encounter. Hookups can involve strangers or individuals who are well acquainted with each other in a nonsexual way; a friend with whom a person is hooking up but not dating is often referred to as a friend with benefits. Hookups have become a popular means for satisfying sexual desires among many young adults, likely reflecting growing reluctance to enter committed relationships; however, they represent a risk factor for sexually transmitted diseases.
