home-based reinforcement
an intervention in which a teacher provides notes about a student’s inappropriate classroom behavior or poor academic performance to his or her parents, who in turn use rewards (e.g., tangible items, earned privileges, verbal praise) and sanctions (e.g., time out, loss of privileges) to encourage positive change. Research has shown that numerous benefits arise from parents and teachers working together in this way: Students tend to earn higher grades, perform better on tests, attend school more regularly, have better behavior, and show more positive attitudes toward themselves and toward school.
