habilitation

n. the process of enhancing the independence, well-being, and level of functioning of an individual with a disability or disorder by providing appropriate resources, such as treatment or training, to enable that person to develop skills and abilities he or she had not had the opportunity to acquire previously. The term is often used specifically to refer to the functional training of children with congenital disabilities, such as congenital visual impairment. Compare rehabilitation.
