gestation period

the period during which an offspring is carried in the uterus of the mother. Gestation periods range from 20 days for the shrew to 550 days for the African rhinoceros and 22 months for the elephant. In human beings, the expected date of birth is usually calculated as 280 days or 9 calendar months from the beginning of the woman’s last menstruation.
