fungiform papillae

fungiform papillae

swellings on the anterior surface (front) of the tongue, in humans numbering about 200 and each shaped like a mushroom. About half the fungiform papillae lack taste buds; the others each contain from 1 to 36 taste buds, with a mean of 3. Receptors in fungiform papillae are particularly sensitive to salty and sweet chemicals. See also papilla.
