fossil

n. the remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past, often the remote past. Usually only the hard parts of organisms become fossilized (e.g., bones, shells, wood), but under certain circumstances, an entire organism is preserved. In some cases, the organism has been turned into stone, a process called petrification.
