forensic psychiatry
the branch of psychiatry concerned with abnormal behavior and mental disorders as they relate to legal issues, hearings, and trials. Major areas of concern include insanity pleas (see insanity defense) and the legal definition of insanity; procedures to commit individuals to mental hospitals; and questions of criminal responsibility, competency to stand trial, guardianship, conservatorship, and confidentiality. Also called legal psychiatry.
