feminization of poverty

the trend for a disproportionate number of the poorest people in Western societies to be women. This can be attributed to a range of factors, including the growing number of families that are headed by a single mother, often with no financial support from the father, and the continuing tendency for occupations with a largely female workforce to pay lower wages.
