in DSM–IV–TR, a disorder with an onset before the age of 6 (but typically within the 1st year following birth), characterized by persistent failure to eat adequately that results in significant failure to gain weight or significant loss of weight over a period of 1 month or more. The cause of the disorder is unknown.
