family-wise error rate

family-wise error rate

the probability of making a Type I error when conducting multiple comparisons among groups within a data set. Although similar to the family-wise alpha level, which is a predetermined probability value to keep the amount of false-positive errors at a manageable level, the family-wise error rate is assessed after a set of hypothesis tests have been conducted. Researchers often like to keep this value at .05. See also testwise error rate.
