factor theory of intelligence

any of various theories postulating that intelligence consists of a number of latent variables (factors) that cannot be measured directly but whose existence is proposed on the basis of factor analysis; it is the individual’s ability in these factors that underpins his or her test scores. For example, a factor theory of intelligence might hold that underlying scores on the many different tests of intelligence are verbal and nonverbal factors.
