expert system

a program, often mimicking expert problem-solving performance, that uses the explicit representation of human knowledge, usually in the form of “if → then” rules. The expert system often employs a certainty-factor algebra to support reasoning in uncertain situations in which there are missing or vague data or unclear alternatives. Expert systems are used in such fields as medical diagnosis and financial prediction. Also called knowledge-based system (KBS).

deficiency motivation

in Abraham Maslow’s humanistic psychology, the type of motivation operating on the lower four levels of his hierarchy of needs (see Maslow’s motivational hierarchy). Deficiency motivation is characterized by the striving to correct a deficit that may be physiological or psychological in nature. Compare metamotivation.
