expert system

a program, often mimicking expert problem-solving performance, that uses the explicit representation of human knowledge, usually in the form of “if → then” rules. The expert system often employs a certainty-factor algebra to support reasoning in uncertain situations in which there are missing or vague data or unclear alternatives. Expert systems are used in such fields as medical diagnosis and financial prediction. Also called knowledge-based system (KBS).
