essentialism

n. in philosophy, the position that things (or some things) have essences; that is, they have certain necessary properties without which they could not be the things they are. In Marxism, postmodernism, poststructuralism, and certain feminist perspectives, essentialism is the rejected position that human beings have an essential nature that transcends such factors as social class, gender, and ethnicity. See also universalism.
