n.

1. an abnormally high degree of sensitivity to sensory stimulation in some or all parts of the body. It is associated with a number of conditions and is a major symptom of mercury poisoning. See also Mad Hatter’s disease.

2. any abnormally high degree of sensitivity, excitability, or irritability in response to stimulation, such as emotional erethism.
