endarterectomy

n. a surgical procedure in which an atherosclerotic plaque is removed from an artery, most commonly the carotid artery at the level of bifurcation in the neck. By removing the plaque, the bore of the artery is enlarged, allowing a greater flow of blood to the brain and thus decreasing the risk of stroke.
