end-stage renal disease
the terminal stage of chronic kidney failure, requiring the individual with the disease to undergo hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or kidney transplant to survive. The psychological effects of living with the condition and its treatment can include depression arising from a sense of lost or limited personal control due to dependence on a dialysis machine, to dialysis-related diet restrictions, and the like. Body-image problems caused by transplantation can develop as well.
