a nonhuman animal whose brainstem has been surgically severed at the point where the spinal cord and medulla oblongata meet. The animal is alert but paralyzed, with a normal sleep–wake cycle on an electroencephalogram. See also cerveau isolé. [French, “isolated brain”]

ipsilateral deficit

a loss of normal function on the same side of the body as a brain lesion or brain damage. Usually, however, a lesion results in a contralateral deficit, or a loss of normal function on the opposite side of the body.
