emergent literacy

the skills, knowledge, and attitudes that are presumed to be developmental precursors to conventional forms of reading and writing. Emergent literacy begins before the child receives formal instruction in reading and writing and occurs in circumstances that support these developments, as when, for example, the child is being read to.
