Drosophila

Drosophila

n. a genus of small fruit flies consisting of about a thousand species commonly known as vinegar flies. The species Drosophila melanogaster is used extensively in genetic investigations, including studies of the genetic components of behavior; for example, U.S. behavioral geneticist Jerry Hirsch (1922–2008) studied the relationship between variations in certain chromosomes in D. melanogaster and differences in geotaxis.
