DRD2 gene

a gene that codes for the dopamine receptor D2 subtype. Variants of this gene have been associated especially with craving-based disorders such as substance dependence (e.g., alcoholism), obesity, and pathological gambling. Variants have also been implicated in schizophrenia, both in its pathophysiology and in the treatment response of those with the disorder to antipsychotic medications. In addition, the gene recently has been linked to an expression of “harsh parenting” by human mothers in response to adverse economic conditions, a finding that suggests the gene may play a significant role in translating environmental responses into biochemical brain events.
