doubting obsession

extreme feelings of uncertainty about even the most obvious matters. Doubting obsession is commonly associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder and often results in checking rituals (e.g., repeatedly looking to see if the door is locked) as a means of reducing doubt-related anxiety. It was originally named doubting mania by French psychiatrist Jean-Pierre Falret (1794–1870).
