discriminated avoidance

an approach to avoidance conditioning in which a conditioned stimulus signals the onset of an aversive unconditioned stimulus. By responding to the first stimulus, the organism can prevent the occurrence of the second. By contrast, in nondiscriminated avoidance, there is no warning conditioned stimulus. Also called signaled avoidance.
