n. a combination of two letters or other symbols used to represent a single speech sound, for example, ph in digraph or ea in head. The corresponding term trigraph refers to three letters or symbols, for example, tth in Matthew. See also diphthong.

midbrain

n. a relatively small region of the upper brainstem that connects the forebrain and hindbrain. It contains the tectum (and associated inferior and superior colliculi), tegmentum, and substantia nigra. Also called mesencephalon.
