photosensitivity

photosensitivity

n. sensitivity to light, especially sunlight, as occurs in albinism and photogenic epilepsy. Conditions marked by increased sensitivity to the effects of sunlight on the skin include systemic lupus erythematosus and xeroderma pigmentosum. Photosensitivity may occur as an adverse reaction to certain drugs, such as the phenothiazines (e.g., chlorpromazine), carbamazepine, St. John’s wort, thiazides, sulfonamides, hallucinogens, and tetracyclines. In such cases, it often takes the form of a rash or other skin reaction. Photosensitivity may also be an immune reaction in some individuals who manifest allergy symptoms after exposure to intense light. —photosensitive adj.
