developmental delay

delay in the age at which developmental milestones are achieved by a child or delay in the development of communication, social, and daily living skills. It most typically refers to delays that are meaningful but do not constitute substantial handicap in infants, toddlers, and preschool children. Such individuals are often eligible for early intervention or preschool services to ameliorate these delays.
