derealization

n. a state characterized by a diminished feeling of reality; that is, an alteration in the perception or cognitive characterization of external reality so that it seems strange or unreal (“This can’t be happening”), often due to trauma or stress. It may also occur as a feature of schizophrenia or of dissociative disorders. See also depersonalization.
