depth interview

an interview designed to reveal an individual’s deep-seated feelings, attitudes, opinions, and motives by encouraging him or her to express them freely without fear of disapproval or concern about the interviewer’s reactions. Such interviews may be conducted, for example, in counseling and as part of qualitative market research. They tend to be relatively lengthy, unstructured, one-on-one conversations.
