any method of selecting individuals to participate in research on the basis of a specific plan, rather than randomly. This includes simple nonrandom techniques, such as judgment sampling and convenience sampling. In more sophisticated methods, such as quota sampling and stratified sampling, various steps are taken with the aim of creating a sample that is representative of the larger population.
