defectology

n. in Russian psychology, the field concerned with the education of children with sensory, physical, cognitive, or neurological impairment. It is roughly equivalent to special education and school psychology in the United States. It is based on the view that the primary problem of a disability is not the organic impairment itself but its social implications. [originally defined by Lev Vygotsky]
