Dauerschlaf

n. a type of therapy in which prolonged sleep is induced with drugs (e.g., barbiturates). Dauerschlaf (German, “perpetual sleep”) has been used in the treatment of substance dependence, status epilepticus, and acute psychotic episodes. Its efficacy and use have been the subject of extreme controversy, and it is now rarely encountered clinically.
