data reduction

the process of reducing a set of measurements or variables into a smaller, more manageable, more reliable, or better theoretically justified set or form. For example, a researcher may conduct a factor analysis on a set of 50 items on well-being and satisfaction to determine whether the information could be summarized more efficiently on underlying dimensions of relationship satisfaction, degree of meaning in life, job satisfaction, and general health.
